Monthly Liturgy Guide
PENTECOST SUNDAY

Greeting

May the Spirit of the Father and Son come upon you,
inflame your hearts,
and remain always with you.

Introduction and Litany of Praise

Option A
Today, we celebrate the Spirit of the past and the present.
We recall the coming of the Spirit on the apostles
which enabled them to begin preaching the Gospel to the world.
We rejoice that the same Spirit is here with us.
Let us pray that our hearts may be freed from sin
and open to the power of the Spirit.(pause)

Option B
Almost 2,000 years ago, on the Jewish Feast of Pentecost,
the apostles left the Upper Room,
where they had been hiding for fear of the Jews,
and went out fearlessly to preach the Gospel to the world.
They could not have done this
without the Holy Spirit, the "power from on high".
That day a new community,
the Christian church, was born.

As we, the new People of God,
celebrate the birthday of our Church,
we realize that we, too, are in need a fresh
outpouring of the Spirit of God. And so we pray:
(Pause)

Lord Jesus, your Spirit enlightens
our minds and opens our hearts:
Lord, have mercy.

Your Spirit renews our strength
and kindles within us the fire of your love:
Christ, have mercy.

Your Spirit forgives and heals and makes us one:
Lord, have mercy.

Opening Prayer

Option A
You open wide your hand, O God,
and satisfy with your good gifts the needs of all.
Pour forth your Holy Spirit on your Church,
gathered in prayer with the mother of Jesus,
and quench the thirst of all who work for justice and truth
at the springs of living water.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever. AMEN.

Option B
In every generation, O God of Easter glory,
you send forth your Spirit
to breathe upon the world and make it come alive!
Fulfill the promise of these Fifty Days
with the abundant harvest of your Spirit's gifts.
May we, the community of believers in Christ,
adorned with various ministries and gifts,
be continually formed into one body
by the one Spirit which has been poured out on all of us.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ,
who sends us the Spirit of truth from you,
and who lives and reigns with you,
God for ever and ever. AMEN.

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

P       The Spirit of God is poured into our hearts and empowers us to cry out in prayer.
Let us bring our prayer to the Father, confident that we will be heard.

           Our response is:

CM      Father, send us your Holy Spirit. (Please repeat)

    1. Father, send your Spirit upon the Church and endow her with a variety of gifts,
challenging us to fidelity to its old truths and creativity in new ministries.
      We pray:

    2. Father, send your Spirit upon those who hold authority in our country,
whether in local or national government or law-courts,
so that all their decisions may be right and just.
      We pray:

    3. Father, send your Spirit upon all who are imprisoned by doubt,
fear, depression, or habits of sin, that they may experience
the joy and freedom promised through the outpouring of the Spirit.
      We pray:

    4. Father, send your Spirit upon Filipinos
who live and work around the world,
so that through them more people
may come to know you and Jesus, your Son,
      whom you have sent.
      We pray:

    5. Father, send your Spirit into our hearts,
so that we can be empowered to call you, "Abba, Father",
and live as your worthy sons and daughters.

      We pray:

[The Presider may add a Petition that is local / relevant]

P      God of power and might,
as you sent the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles at Pentecost,
renew in us the same Spirit,
that we may be filled with hope and rejoice in our faith.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Prayer over the Gifts

Generous, loving God,
as we present to you this bread and wine,
we thank you for your countless gifts.
In a special way we thank you today
for the gift of Life in the Spirit.
Grant that our lives may show the gratitude that is in our hearts.
We make our prayer through Christ our Lord . AMEN.

Invitation to the Lord's Prayer

Because of the Spirit crying out from within us
we are empowered to call God, Abba - Father.
So let us now pray with confidence: Our Father

Deliver us Lord

Deliver us, Lord, from every evil
and grant, in our day, in our hearts, in our country,
the peace of Christ,
which is the work of your Spirit.
In your mercy keep us free from sin
and protect us from all anxiety
while the Spirit leads us in joyful hope
toward the coming of our Savior Jesus Christ

Prayer for Peace

Lord Jesus Christ,
on Pentecost Day you sent your Holy Spirit on your disciples,
and with hearts on fire,
they went forth to preach the Gospel to the whole world.
Send your Spirit of Love on our world,
to gather people of every race, language, and way of life,
into the peace and unity of your kingdom
where you live for ever and ever.

Exchange of Peace

Jesus greeted his disciples with the words: 'Peace be with you.'
As God's family, we greet each other in the same way.

[Optional Prayer to accompany the Breaking of Bread]

May our sharing in this one cup and one bread
be our pledge to live according to the Spirit of God.
'For when we eat this bread and drink this wine
we proclaim the death of the Lord Jesus
until he comes in glory'. (1 Cor. 11:26)

Invitation to Communion

Here is the risen Christ
whose Spirit gathers us together around this altar-table.

Prayer after Communion

Most Gracious God,
pour out your Spirit upon us;
enkindle within us the fire of your Divine Love
so that we can be re-created.
Inspire us with a sense of mission and commitment
so that we, who have been baptized in the one Spirit,
may, like the first disciples,
be ready to share the gifts of the same Spirit,
serving the local community and the Church.
And we do this through Jesus who is Lord for ever and ever
. AMEN.

Blessing

This day the Father of light has enlightened the minds of the disciples
by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. AMEN

May God bless you
and give you the gifts of the Spirit for ever. AMEN

May the fire which hovered over the disciples as tongues of flame
burn out all evil from your hearts
and make them glow with pure light. AMEN

God inspired speech in different tongues
to proclaim one faith.
May we Christians be respectful of all traditions
as we witness to unity in diversity. AMEN

May almighty God bless you,
+ Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. AMEN

Dismissal

Go in peace and may the Spirit of Christ be your guide
in wherever you go and in whatever you do.
