Liturgy Guide
2nd Sunday of Lent (YearA)

Sign of the Cross

Greeting

Glory be to God the Father
who reveals to us Jesus his Son.
May you listen to him
and may he be always with you.

Introduction

Option A
On Mount Tabor, Jesus' disciples got a glimpse of the glory of God.
It was a wonderful experience for them and Peter exclaimed,
'Lord, it is good for us to be here.'
And it is good for us to be here this (morning / evening)
because we too get a glimpse of our own glory,
for we too are children of God. [Pause]

Lord Jesus, you told your disciples
that you will suffer greatly
and be rejected by the leaders of the people:
Lord, have mercy.

Lord Jesus, you tell your disciples
to take up their crosses and follow you:
Christ, have mercy.

Lord Jesus, you tell your disciples
that suffering and the cross lead to victory and glory:
Lord, have mercy.

Option B
'This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!"
These words, addressed to the apostles,
are now addressed to us.
Today we are asked to look at Jesus
and listen to what he says to us.
Let us ask him to forgive our sins
and free us from anything that hinders our hearing of the Gospel.

We pray to you, God of Abraham, Elijah and Moses.
Lord, have mercy.

We pray to you, Lord of all Christians.
Christ, have mercy.

We pray to you, Lord of all peoples.
Lord, have mercy.

Option C
There are moments in everyone's life
when important decisions are to be made.
Jesus saw ahead of him a growing opposition
from the religious leaders: they were planning to kill him.
What would he do? He went up the mountain,
prayed to his Father, and there received
the courage and strength that he needed. (pause)

Lord Jesus,
you accepted to go to Jerusalem, to suffer and be killed:
Lord, have mercy.

Lord Jesus,
on the holy mountain you gave the disciples
a glimpse of your glory:
Christ, have mercy.

Lord Jesus,
you teach us that the sufferings of this present time
are nothing compared to the glory that is to be revealed:
Lord, have mercy.

Opening Prayer

O God of mystery,
from the dazzling cloud
you revealed Jesus in glory as your beloved Son.
During these forty days
inspire us by your word,
reveal to your Church the bright glory of your presence,
and transform us into the image of the risen Lord,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
holy and mighty God for ever and ever. AMEN.

Liturgy of the Word

Homily

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

P         As we recall Jesus' transfiguration and renew our commitment
to listen to him, let us also present our petitions, saying.

             With confidence we pray:

CM     Lord, transform us in your love. (Please repeat)

    1. For ourselves: (pause)
that we may have faith like Abraham's,
ready to listen to the voice of God
and follow wherever God leads us, we pray:
    2. May government officials listen to the voice of the poor
and the weak instead of giving in to the demands
of the rich and powerful, we pray:
    3. For all our parishioners who are old or sick: (pause)
may they know the healing touch of Jesus
who can transfigure their suffering and cast out their fear, we pray:
    4. For peace in Mindanao, Beirut, and other parts of the world
where armed conflict is claiming precious lives, we pray:
    5. These days, as we observe the 60th Anniversary of the Battle for Manila,
we remember the tens of thousands of people who were killed.
We remember, in particular, the 5 Columban Priests from Malate
who "stayed with their people and died with them".

(After about ½ minute the Presider prays:)

[The Presider may add a Petition that is local / relevant]

P     God of love and mercy,
give us the grace to rise above our human weaknesses
so that we may be faithful to your Son
and to the demands of the Gospel.
Grant this through Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Prayer over the Gifts

Lord, look upon the face of Christ, your Son,
who gave himself up as a ransom for all,
so that from the rising of the sun to its setting
your name may be great among the nations
and one sacrifice may be offered to your glory.
We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. AMEN.

(Please note that there is a special Preface - P13 - for today's Celebration)

Invitation to the Lord’s Prayer

On Mount Tabor, the Father said to Jesus:
"This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him."
We are God's beloved sons and daughters and so we say:
Our Father ...

or

God of Abraham, Father of Jesus,
you ask us to listen to your Son.
We have listened to him;
it is he who taught us to pray: Our Father ...

Deliver us Lord

Deliver us, Lord, from all sin
and free us from the fear of being changed
so that we can become more like your Son Jesus.
During this Lenten season
may the light of his glory shine upon us
as we wait in joyful hope for his coming;
for he is the Savior, Jesus Christ.

Prayer for Peace

Lord, Jesus Christ,
you said to your apostles on the holy mountain:
"Rise, and do not be afraid."
Look not on our sins,
but on the faith of your Church,
and grant us the peace and unity of your kingdom,
where you live for ever and ever.

Exchange of Peace
As we exchange a sign of peace
we pray that we can see the face of God
revealed in the persons beside us.

Optional Prayer to accompany the ‘Breaking of Bread’

P      Heavenly Father,
your beloved Son is the food
        that nourishes the whole world.
May this bread broken and cup poured
nourish us in charity and peace:
A     LAMB OF GOD.....

Invitation to Communion

This is Jesus, God's beloved Son.
Blessed are we who look upon him
and receive him at this table.
Yes, Lord, it is good for us to be here.

Lord, I am not worthy…

Prayer after Communion

Eternal Father,
you have brightened our lives today;
we have seen your glory on the face of Jesus.
In times of darkness may we to listen to his voice
and without fear, continue on the journey of life.
We ask this in the name of the same Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Solemn Blessing

May God the Father continue to call you his beloved. AMEN

May you always be ready to listen to the voice of God the Son. AMEN

May the Holy Spirit shower blessings upon you
so that you will live holy lives. AMEN.

And may almighty God bless you, +
the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. AMEN.

Dismissal

Yes, Lord, it was good for us to be here!
Let us go forth to transform the world!
