Liturgy Guide
3rd Sunday of Lent (YearA)

Sign of the Cross

Greeting
  [based on 2nd Reading]

The love of God has been poured out into our hearts
by the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
May that love be always with you.

Introduction

Option A
There is drama in today's Gospel as we listen to the moving
encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman.
He tells her about the gift God wants to give her
- the gift he called 'living water'.
Today we encounter the same Jesus
and he offers us the same gift.
Let us prepare ourselves to receive it. (pause)

Lord Jesus, your words can turn our dryness to fervent hope:
Lord, have mercy.

Lord Jesus, you show us how to worship
the Father in Spirit and Truth:
Christ, have mercy.

Lord Jesus, give us that fountain of living water,
welling up to eternal life:
Lord, have mercy.

Option B
From the wounded side of Christ flow blood and water,
the fountain of sacramental life in the church.
Before we draw from these sources of our salvation,
let us ask forgiveness and strength from the Lord. (pause)

Lord Jesus, you died for us while we were still sinners:
Lord, have mercy.

Lord Jesus, you alone can give us living water:
Christ, have mercy.

Lord Jesus, you give us the Holy Spirit,
the source of our life of grace:
Lord, have mercy.

Opening Prayer

O God, living and true,
look upon your people,
whose dry and stony hearts are parched with thirst.
Unseal the living water of your Spirit;
let it become within us an ever-flowing spring,
gushing up to eternal life.
Thus may we worship you in spirit and in truth,
through Christ, our deliverance and hope,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever. AMEN.

Liturgy of the Word

Homily

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

P        The Lord Jesus has taught us to worship in spirit and in truth.
United with him, we bring before our Father the needs of the
          Church and of the world.

             With confidence we pray:

CM     Lord of life, hear our prayer. (Please repeat)

    1. For all those who, like the Samaritan woman,
are thirsty and are searching for a deeper meaning in life. (pause)
May they find this in Jesus - the Way,
the Truth and the Life. Let us pray to the Lord :
    2. For those who are lonely or rejected: (pause)
that they may find others who are willing to listen to them.
Let us pray to the Lord:
    3. For all who are separated from their spouses
      and now have second relationships:
that they may encounter the same Jesus
who gave meaning to the life of the Woman from Samaria.
Let us pray to the Lord:
    4. For all Christians: (pause)
that we, like the Woman at the Well,
may bring others to accept Jesus as the Lord and Giver of life.
Let us pray to the Lord:

[The Presider may add a Petition that is local / relevant]

P     Heavenly Father,
you sent your Son into our world to quench our thirst
with the living water of your grace and blessings.
Help us to accept them with humble hearts.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Prayer over the Gifts

God, the living fountain of new life,
in these signs of bread and wine
your Son Jesus comes among us.
May he satisfy our hunger
and quench our thirst
for a deeper faith and hope and love.
All this we ask in the name of the same Christ our Lord. AMEN.

(Presiders may wish to use Preface #14 - The Woman of Samaria)

Invitation to the Lord’s Prayer

We, who thirst for living water, now turn to our God and pray:
Our Father ...

Deliver us Lord  [based on 2nd Reading]

Deliver us, Lord, from every evil.
In your mercy keep us free from sin,
protect us in time of trial,
and, "since we are justified by faith,
may we have peace with you
through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ".

Prayer for Peace

Lord, Jesus Christ,
you said to the Woman at the Well:
"God is spirit, and those who worship him
must worship in spirit and truth."
Look not on our sins,
but on the faith of your Church,
and grant us the desire to always worship you
who live for ever and ever.

Exchange of Peace
Because we are united in spirit and in truth
let us offer one another a sign of peace.

Optional Prayer to accompany the ‘Breaking of Bread’

P      We break this bread,
        once again remembering the night
when your Son was broken and crushed.
But you filled him with glory.
        He sent us his Spirit
who bids us eat and drink in peace and fellowship:
A     LAMB OF GOD.....

Invitation to Communion

This is Jesus who promises us:
"Those who drink of the water that I will give
will never be thirsty".
Blessed are we who are invited to eat and drink
at the banquet of the Lord.

Lord, I am not worthy…

Prayer after Communion   [based on and Reading & Gospel]

Source of life and goodness,
your love has been poured into our hearts
through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.
"While we were yet sinners Christ died for us."
May we learn to profess our faith with courage and conviction
"for we have heard for ourselves,
and we know that he is truly the Savior of the world."
Grant this through the same Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Solemn Blessing

May the Lord wash you in the waters of life,
and nourish you with his love and hope. AMEN.

May the Lord pour the waters of his love upon your dryness
and keep you always in his peace. AMEN.

May God, the fountain of new life,
offer the living water that springs up from the rock - Jesus Christ. AMEN.

And may Almighty God bless you, +
the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.AMEN.

Dismissal

Our celebration is ended.
Go forth and, like the Samaritan woman,
proclaim to others that you have met Jesus the Messiah.
