Liturgy Guide
18th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B)

Sign of the Cross

Greeting

May the Lord who nourishes you with the Bread of Life,
be always with you.

Introduction and Litany of Praise

Option A
Last Sunday, we saw how Jesus gave bread to the people in the wilderness. But when they came back the following day for more he said to them, 'Do not work for the food that perishes.'
We are here today because we know that we need the food that endures for eternal life. (pause)

Jesus our Savior, you are the Bread of life:
Lord, have mercy.

Jesus our Redeemer, you fill us with good things:
Christ, have mercy.

Jesus our Life, in you we have all we need:
Lord, have mercy.

Option B
We hunger for many things.
However, only God can satisfy our deepest hungers.
Let us prepare ourselves
to receive the nourishment God wants to give us. (pause)

Lord, you nourish our minds with the bread of life:
Lord, have mercy.

You nourish our spirits with the bread of hope:
Christ, have mercy.

You nourish our hearts with the bread of love:
Lord, have mercy.

Opening Prayer

Option A
Lord, giver of lasting life,
satisfy our hunger through Christ, the Bread of Life,
and quench our thirst with your gift of faith,
that we may no longer work for food that perishes,
but believe in the One whom you have sent.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.
AMEN.

Option B
O God, whose gift to our ancestors was manna in the wilderness,
we believe in the One whom you have sent,
on whom you have set your seal.
Let there be no lack of bread
on the tables of any of your children,
and stir up within us also a longing for your word,
that we may be able to satisfy that hunger for truth
that you have placed within every human heart.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.
AMEN.

the prayers of your people in the desert.

the eternal life promised by your Son,

Prayer over the Gifts

Sustainer of life,
here are our gifts of bread and wine,
signs of our faith and hope.
May we, in our quest for happiness,
never work for the food that perishes,
but for the food that endures for eternal life.
Grant this through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Invitation to the Lord’s Prayer

In the words of Jesus,
let us ask our heavenly Father to give us the bread of life.

Our Father ...

Deliver us Lord

Deliver us, Lord, from every evil
and grant us peace in our day.
Create us anew in your image,
in true righteousness and holiness,
as we wait in joyful hope
for the coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Prayer for Peace

Lord Jesus Christ, you say to us:
"Do not work for the food that perishes,
but for the food that endures for eternal life."
Look not on our sins,
but on the faith of your Church,
and grant us the peace and unity of your kingdom
where you live for ever and ever. AMEN

Exchange of Peace
We form a single body
by sharing in the one body and the one cup.
Let us now express the unity we have in Christ.

Optional Prayer to accompany the ‘Breaking of Bread’

P     May our breaking of this bread of life
and our sharing of this meal
        bring us together,
        make us one,
and enable us to give life to the world.

A     LAMB OF GOD.....

Invitation to Communion

Option B
This is Jesus who says to us today:
'I am the Bread of Life.
Whoever comes to me will never be hungry,
and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.'
Lord, I am not worthy…

Prayer after Communion

Provident Father,
you have satisfied our hunger with the true bread from heaven.
Give us this bread always
so that, believing in him whom you have sent,
we will never be hungry again.
All this we ask through Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Solemn Blessing

May the Father,
who fed his children with bread and honey in the wilderness,
strengthen you in your pilgrimage to the Promised Land. AMEN.

May the Son,
who gave his flesh for food and his blood for drink,
keep you in eternal life and raise you up on the last day. AMEN.

May the Holy Spirit,
who leads us into all truth,
empower you to proclaim the death of Jesus until he comes. AMEN.

Dismissal

You have been created in the likeness of God.
Go in true righteousness and holiness.
Thanks be to God.
