Gospel Reflections by Father Gerry Pierse, C.Ss.R.

Meditation Groups

Bible Sharing * The Meditation Proper * The Sharing

Most people find that they are helped a lot by belonging to a prayer group. Some find that they meditate better by just being with others. I find that there are a number of other benefits also from being with a group. There is a sense of support and there can be a sharing of tapes, books and resources. More important is the sharing of the experience, especially the experience of "failure." We do not have to be a "success" in meditation in the sense of getting rid of the thoughts that naturally tend to come to our minds. We just have to be faithful in coming back again and again to our prayer word. Hearing the struggle of others convinces us that we are normal and that we should not give up just because we seem to be getting nowhere.

Most meditation groups begin with a tape or a talk, then meditate and finish with or without a discussion. In my groups we have three stages. I believe that these are very important for good theological reasons.

Sundays into Silence

A Pathway to Life

by Gerry Pierse, cssr
380 pp., PhP 299, U$ 19.95

“The best word I can find to describe this book is integration. In these reflections on the gospel readings for year A, B, and C of the liturgical cycle, Fr. Pierse integrates the richness of the word of God with experiences and stories from life in the community. He shows how through silence, the word can bear fruit in service and sacrament.” (R. J. Cardinal Vidal)
