The parable of the vineyard finds its origins in Isaiah (5:1-7). The allegorical features of the gospel reading are clear enough. God’s son has been rejected by his people and has died in their hands. The formal denouncement will come with the destruction of the temple and country.
In our time we see violence as something abhorrent. Yet it retails its force in the telling of a story. Unfortunately in a culture of hatred and ware, the value of human life is often diminished. As we look upon the cross, we see the greatest act of love rejected. Of that we must be always mindful, as we strive to make God’s love our own.
