When scores of Hebrew boys lost their lives for the simple reason of being born, Moses was fortunate enough to survive and be adopted by the royal family. But in his good fortune, Moses did not forget his humble origins and true identity. Though his act of murder was gravely sinful, the deed reveals where his loyalties lie. Besides, his heart was troubled whenever he saw injustice in human transactions, and he confronted it.
Jesus laments the hardhearted ways of Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum. These were places he worked most of his miracles, yet the people of these cities failed to recognize him and mend their ways. Unlike Moses, their good fortune and material gains had corrupted them, and their hearts had forgotten their true origins and identity. They did not recognize God’s presence and action in their midst and return to Him.
When Jesus looks at me, would he have reason to rejoice or lament?
