Daniel interprets the dream of King Nebuchadnezzar. Even though the King is powerful, his kingdom will disintegrate over several generations. Jesus points to the physical structure of the Temple and predicts its destruction. Everything earthly must disappear. Civilizations must die. Kingdoms shall perish. All things living will pass away. Even religious organizations and structures erected by human beings shall disappear. A true believer is not to panic and lose heart when these things happen. It is the law of nature that earthly realities must end sometime. “These things must happen first,” says Jesus. Before what? Before a new heavens and new earth ordered by God shall be inaugurated. Only God’s Kingdom remains forever. Those who worship in Spirit and Truth (Jn 4:23-24) will find peace and permanence.
I once read about some graffiti on a wall in Austria. It read: “‘God is dead’—Nietzsche.” Beneath the statement someone else had added another: “‘Nietzsche is dead’—God.”
