Many years ago, I watched a movie that still remains etched in my mind for several reasons. One of them is a scene wherein an art teacher teaches a class of second graders. He tells them the story of a proud kite, colorful and glorious, flying high up the skies, much to the envy of the birds. One of the birds praised him, but wondered how much higher the kite could actually fly if it could get rid of the thread on its legs, controlled by the child on the ground. The proud kite buys into it and asks the bird to cut off the thread with its beak. The moment the bird did so, the kite lost direction, fell to the ground, torn to pieces, much to the grief of the child. Narrating the story, the art teacher tells the teary-eyed students: “Fly high, as high as you want. We, your teachers and parents, are only happy to let you fly higher and we will adjust the thread accordingly. But never consider the thread to be a chain limiting your freedom. Never cut yourself off it. For, it is that thread that helps us guide you and helps you fly higher.”
Never consider the yoke of Christ as limiting your freedom. Instead, it helps you walk, run, and soar as with eagle’s wings.
