“To take up your cross” is not an expression that is found in Jewish literature, and many therefore suppose that this phrase was put in Jesus’s mouth by the Gospel: writer, who had hindsight on the crucifixion of Jesus. But other scholars believe it was quite possible for Jesus to have used this stunning expression, since crucifixions were a common sight in his day. Someone very usefully pointed out that he did not say, “Take up my cross...” but “Take up your cross....”
