A story from Anthony De Mello (The Song of the Bird):
On the street I saw a naked child, hungry and shivering in the cold. I became angry and said to God, “Why do you allow this? Why don’t you do something?”
God did not reply.
That night he said, quite suddenly, “I certainly did something. I made you.”
There are times when we, faced with the extent of violence, injustice, and suffering in the world, are tempted to ask, like Gideon did: “If God is with us, why is all this happening to us? Why has He abandoned us now?” In response to Gideon’s question, God chooses him to save the people, but Gideon offers several excuses. And God tells him: “I am going to wait for you here.”
How long have I kept God waiting for me to respond to His call? Am I still out finding excuses to turn down God’s call to be His instrument for the redemption of His people?
