Look at Ruth’s response to her mother-in-law: “I will go where you go and stay where you stay. Your people will be my people and your god, my God.” Ruth is committed to being with Naomi for the rest of her life. In other words, she is willing to love her mother-in-law with all her heart, soul, and mind. Thus, Ruth is a near-perfect example of the kind of devotion and commitment the first commandment requires of us. For the commandment asks us to love the Lord, our God, with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all our mind. It is no wonder then, that Ruth, a gentile woman, is rewarded by being named in the genealogy of Jesus (Matt 1:5). She prefigured in some way the kind of love and devotion Jesus would show to his Father.
Let us pray: Lord Jesus, I will go where you go and stay where you stay. Your people will be my people, and your Father, my Father.
